Located on the northern side of the
rock, dominating glazing bar, the Gothic monastery, more
known under the name of Merveille, contains six rooms. Built
since 1204 on older foundations, it will be completed in
1228.
Joined with the church, on the last floor of the Wonder,
the cloister is. Splendid hanging garden between sky and
sea, the cloister was the place of walk of the monks. It
is the only place of the Mount where one finds the many
ones and fine sculptures cut in the stone of Caen. A door
allows communiquerdu cloister the Refectory. It is in the
Refectory that the monks found themselves with each meal.
There, according to the Saint-Benoît cheese rule,
the monks ate in an absolute silence. Only the voice of
the monk charged to read Eva, giles got along per hour of
the meals. Right under the Refectory the Room of the Hosts
is. It is in this room that the lords and the kings were
accomodated. It is necessary to imagine decorations which
disappeared today: tapestry, stained glasses, furniture
and paintings, to realize of the glare which this room was
to take the days of receptions. On the same floor of the
Wonder, the Room of the Knights is. This room appellait
Scriptorium formerly, the monks passed there most of their
time to copy and enluminer invaluable manuscripts. The origin
of the name Salle of the Knights goes up with creation about
the Knights of the Saint Michael by LouisXI. These knights
should have met annually in this room, however, it seems
that that never arrived. Always in the Wonder, under the
Room of the Knights, the Storeroom is. This room, dark and
fresh was used as reserve. A door makes it possible to pass
from the storeroom to the Chaplaincy, last of the six rooms
of the Wonder. It is there that were received the poor pilgrims
to be nourished.
